Stallion Show 2003, Part 3:
On to Drachten

[*** A List of the Results ***]
The show started with nearly 190 young stallions showing their stuff. These were judged over the course of two days. By the end of the second day, forty-eight had made it to "Round 2". On the third day, these were cut again down to the best twenty. The judges decided that each of these twenty deserved to move on to a more extensive test in the village of Drachten (sorry the pics are fuzzy. They have been captured from a camcorder).

Wilco P., of the young stallions, he was judged "Best in Show"

In classes of about 10 horses each, the judges ("inspectors"), dressed in black suits and derbies, scrutinized each horse individually against a standard. Horses were judged standing, at a walk, and at a trot. "Runners", dressed in white, are responsible for leading the horses around the ring, and showing these animals at their best.
NOTE: We tried to include helpful captions for the photos. You can see the caption by placing your cursor over the picture.
Isn't this guy well-behaved? He is waiting to go in the ring and the kids are petting him. They are pretty peppy when they come into the ring The judges look over the walk The stallion is then judged on a trot
They are led around the ring a first time.... And then a second time The horses for the class are then brought in for a final walk. All but the best are eliminated
Horses which are not eliminated must undergo a vet check and farrier check immediately after the class
Again, the first two days of the show judged young stallions (3-4 years) to see which might be invited to go to Drachten. If a young stallion goes to Drachten (a village in Friesland), he will be scrutinized for about 2 weeks -- poked, proded, x-rayed, semen tested, judged for performance and manners - you name it. Just getting to Drachten is a huge success... of about 190 horses this year, just 20 were invited to go on. Probably about 50%-75% of these will be eliminated at Drachten. The remainder will receive conditional approval as breeding stallions. Later on, their offspring will be judged and must be considered excellent quality before the stallion achieves "full approval". Of the top 20 stallions, three were judged again in order to pick "Best of Show". Here are shots of some of the top twenty finishers
